The
Purposes of
Brainstorming
in our Process
In our process, we have identified four distinct purposes for brainstorming:
• Getting to Know Each Other
• Generating Ideas
• Connecting Different Subjects
• Diving Deeper into the Topic
01
Getting to know each other
When working with a new group, it’s crucial to acknowledge that each member brings unique backgrounds, interests, norms, and values to the table. In Platform Project 3, our group consists of 11 individuals from diverse fields of study, countries, and even generations.

To create artwork in a transdisciplinary way, we must first understand each other’s perspectives and motivations for joining Emergence. Brainstorming provides a platform to foster these connections, allowing us to share our stories and establish a foundation for fruitful collaboration.

Generating ideas
The classic purpose of brainstorming is to generate ideas. At this stage, the focus is on producing as many ideas as possible, emphasizing quantity over quality. This free-flowing exchange encourages creativity by embracing a “yes, and...” mindset rather than dismissing ideas with “no, but...”.

Connecting different subjects
During our process—particularly while developing the robot arms for our project—brainstorming was essential in finding connections between seemingly unrelated subjects. These sessions encouraged associative thinking, enabling us to bridge gaps between disciplines and concepts. This mirrors the formation of new neural pathways in the brain, fostering creativity and innovation.

Diving deeper into the topic
In some sessions, we transitioned from divergent brainstorming to convergent thinking, focusing on specific topics related to our artwork. These in-depth explorations sparked curiosity, helped us uncover new insights, and refined our understanding of the subjects.
