Platform Project 4
Material Science x Future Fabrics

Entering its fourth edition, Platform Project 4 from Emergence Delft will delve into the exciting intersection of Material Science and Future Fabrics. This semester, we’ll unlock new potential at the intersection of technology and craftsmanship, inviting students to explore, experiment, and rethink textiles in bold, groundbreaking ways. From weaving and knitting to advanced technologies, we’ll push beyond tradition to discover what’s possible in the future of fabrics.

A Curious Playground for Exploration

Our exploration will be guided by key questions:

  • What are meta materials, and can we design and fabricate them?

  • Can we create materials that breathe and grow?

  • Should craftsmanship be automated, or can technology empower it without replacing it?

  • How might techniques like 4D printing or programmable materials lead to garments that adapt in real time?

  • Can we design sustainable, bio-based textiles that leave zero impact?

  • How can we integrate sensors into fabrics to make them “smart”?

  • What is the future of wearable technology?

These and many more questions drive us toward discovering: What Can Future Fabric Be?

We’re ready to find out! Our objective is to work with a broad range of materials, breaking boundaries between engineering and fashion design. This is about pushing the limits, discovering possibilities, and letting curiosity lead the way.

Join Us!

Platform Project 4 is seeking diverse disciplines. Like every Emergence Delft Project, we aim to combine the skills of Art Academies and TU Delft students to open up new areas for exploration. Whether you’re a:
Computational fabricator, Textile maker , Fashion designer, Material developer, Mechanical engineer, Industrial designer, Software developer, Electrical engineer, someone who Tinkers & experiments, Sewer, Materials scientist, Anthropologist, Data scientist
…or somewhere in between, this project is for you!

Shaping the Future of Textiles

As Platform Project 4 students, you’ll collaborate with experts from TU Delft for deep material science insights, alongside an artist (yet to be announced) who will bring craft, design, and fashion expertise. Together, we’re not just reimagining textiles—we’re redefining them, building a platform for innovation. With access to cutting-edge research and fabrication methods, we’ll experiment with existing breakthroughs, build on them, and create entirely new ones.

What to Expect

At the Dream Hall, we’ll establish an experimental “lab” where curiosity-driven research thrives. This space will foster interdisciplinary collaboration among students and artists. Running from February to August 2025, Platform Project 4 is for students ready to dive into hands-on, experimental exploration with a focus on innovation and impact.
